Here’s How to Pick the *Perfect* Avocado

We love love love this full-of-good-fat fruit… blame it on our West Coast roots! A delicious topping for basically everything from smoothies to tacos, it’s just one of those foods that makes a welcome addition to any meal.

But when it comes to soup? You aren’t really living if you’re not adding avocados to your soup.

Okay, so since it’s all going to be blended together anyway, the ripeness isn’t as imperative as if you were eating them raw. But you still want to add the best avocados you can find. Here’s how to pick ‘em.

Those who shop the fruit know that selecting the best avocado is somewhat of an acquired skill. You should shop with your hands; the feel of the fruit is everything, sort of like finding cashmere in a rack full of polyester.

Keep reading to level-up your avocado finding abilities!

The Perfect Color

First, the color. You want to start by exploring the hue of the avocado skin, which will become dark green/brown as it becomes more and more ripe, or be a light green (and more firm) if they were picked too soon. And when the color starts to shift from deep green into brown-ish territory, the avocados are starting to be overripe.

The perfect avocado would perfectly match Gwyneth Paltrow’s wardrobe in Great Expectations. You’re going for deep green vibes here.

There are a few different varieties of avocados, and each will have slight variations in color throughout the ripening process. When it comes to Hass avocados, their skin tends to turn almost black as they become more ripe. Other avocados are usually good to go when they turn medium-to-dark green.

Once you’ve picked the perfectly colored avo, check it out for indentations and blemishes. Imperfections can indicate that your fruit has fallen on the floor or been handled roughly- which is a hard pass.

The Navel

Another way to pick the perfect avocado is by the navel. Yes, you read that right. Gently place your thumb on the “belly button” (where the stem was before it was picked). If it falls off easily, it’s ready to be eaten. If it stubbornly stays in place, it was picked too soon and needs some time to mature. Typically, as avocados ripen, the naval will fall off on its own.

You also want to use your sense of touch to tell if an avocado is perfectly ripe, or not. If the fruit is ripe, it will have a little give. If it’s overripe it will be too soft. If it’s not ripe yet, it will be firm like an apple.

“A surefire way to gauge an avocado’s ripeness is to gently squeeze the fruit in the palm of your hand,” Jan DeLyser, marketing for the California Avocado Commission tells MyDomaine. “But avoid bruising the fruit by not using your fingertips when doing so.”

Go ahead and give the avocados that caught your eye a little squeeze to check the ripeness. Just try not to squeeze it so hard that you’ll bruise the fruit, especially if you decide to leave it for the next person.

If you accidentally buy an avocado that isn’t ripe yet, here’s a nifty (albeit, odd) way to help facilitate the process: store it in a brown paper bag with a banana and wait overnight. You will be shocked at how soft it is.

Paleo Avocado Chipotle Soup

After you picked the perfect avocados, you’re ready to make your soup! As you’ll see below, this recipe is insanely easy to make. The simplicity of this dish is what makes it oh-so satisfying. Also, this is just another excuse to get some avocado into your life.

To start, you’re going to make your Power Provisions soup according to the directions on the cup. If you are cooking for two (or are just feeling extra hungry) simply make two soup cups and double the ingredients below.

Next, slice your perfectly ripe avocado, throw it in the blender and pour your finished bone broth soup on top. Blend it all until it’s smooth and creamy, and the chunks of avocado have disappeared.

Then transfer it all the contents to your soup bowl (or bowls), being cautious of splashes because your soup will still be hot!

Top it off with additional avocados slices, chopped bacon, fresh cilantro, and a few sprinkles of red pepper if you’re ~feeling spicy~ and your keto-friendly soup is ready to be enjoyed.
